The Thessalonians are being told by false apostles that the long anticipated day of the Lord has already come. Because of this they may have been more inclined to avoid daily tasks and employment. Rather than staying industrious in the present, they may have turned to “idleness”—simply sitting and waiting for an immediate encounter with Christ in His second coming. Paul’s message will be to “get to work” because there’s still work in this age to do until Christ returns.
