In retrospect those who believe in Jesus do not see His miracles merely as wonders. They see them as signs. Whether done by Him, or by disciples who acted in His name, Christians believe Jesus’ supernatural acts confirmed His claims to be one with God the Father. Those who believe in Jesus are convinced that He did miracles not to entertain, or to make a name for Himself, but to encourage men and women to believe in Him for everlasting life.

J. P. Moreland: The New Testament writers say, “These things were not done in a corner, they were done in public, and, you know,” they say to their audience, “that these things really happened.” Why that is so important is this: When it comes to the New Testament, the miracles of Jesus are actually signs that He was who He claimed to be. Jesus repeatedly said, Don’t believe Me because of My words. Don’t believe Me because I say I’m a prophet from God or that I’m His Son. Believe Me because the signs I do simply can’t be explained if I’m simply a man.

The New Testament says Jesus healed a crippled man, to affirm His right to forgive sins. It says He fed thousands with a small amount of food, to show that He was “the Bread” of heaven.

Luis Palau: The miracles really demonstrated that Jesus Christ was more than just another man, that there was a quality of the divinity in Him. And the Bible says that in Him dwelt the whole fullness of God in bodily form, in Colossians 2. And then Jesus on one occasion said to the apostles, “If you don’t believe My Words, at least believe the works, because they testify of Me” (see John 10:37–38). And when He could raise the dead, the apostles were amazed. When He could feed five thousand out of five loaves of bread and three fishes or vice versa, and He could do those tremendous miracles, the apostles saw the divinity of Jesus Christ.

John 20:30–31 (NKJV)

With these miracles in view, the apostle John summarized his record of Jesus’ life by saying,

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
