They would not have to worry about the upkeep of the animal and they were very expensive

It didn’t require any equipment or upkeep.

No animals to care for. It didn’t cost anything , and now we know that is is so healthy for us.

Walking is slow, but most convenient. One needs not to care for an animal. A person can walk around 20 miles a day. The Land of Israel is not that long or that wide, so a week or two will get a person from one end to the other.

In Bible times, walking is their primary way of moving from one place to the other. An average person would travel about 17-23 miles per day. While other modes of travel are available but are generally used for different purposes, horses are used mainly for military purposes, and donkeys and camels are used as packed animals.
