Blamelessness | Purity |
For it seems to me that God has put us apostles on display at the end of the procession, like those condemned to die in the arena. We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to human beings. (1 Corinthians 4:9 NIV) | Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry. I speak to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say. (1 Corinthians 10:14-15 NIV) |
A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this? (1 Corinthians 5:1-2 NIV) | Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18-19 NIV) |
Now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people. (1 Corinthians 5:9-11 NIV) | Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 NIV) |
But instead, one brother takes another to court—and this in front of unbelievers! (1 Corinthians 6:6 NIV) | Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. (1 Corinthians 9:24-25 NIV) |
Blamelessness is a way of using your freedom to protect people, and to avoid becoming a stumbling block to those around you. It matters what matters to others. Personal holiness is essential to Paul’s message. Nonetheless, he is careful to never let it appear to be a private project where we disregard others and are only concerned with our own thoughts and actions. If the Christian ethic ended here, it would be another kind of self-centered lifestyle that drove people apart and pulled up short of the love God calls us to have for one another.
