This lesson gave us a chance to explore the world Moses and the Hebrew people inhabited. It was not friendly to them and would become even more hostile as they followed God’s call for them to leave their mighty taskmasters in Egypt and enter their promised land.

Can you feel the weight of this immense empire with its colossal statues and temples, its centuries-old beliefs and traditions … in contrast to one of many slave groups who might only hope to restore straw for their bricks? It’s a bleak picture, and only getting darker. But this is the darkness before the dawn of the greatest story of redemption in the Old Testament.
