When you think of war, what do you feel? Repulsion and anger? Excitement and interest? What about the idea of “holy war”? Do images come to mind of fanatical extremists who use God for their own twisted agendas? What will you do with the God in the Bible who declares war on Egypt? How will we make sense of the Bible’s declaration that he is, himself, a “warrior”?

In this lesson we’ll watch God as the militant liberator. He frees his people from the Egyptian tyrant, and he destroys the tyrant and his armies. That will be worth a song of praise in Exodus 15. And it will be worth our own deeper investigation of the proper place for conflict in a world that has usurped the place of its true God.
