Following its many references to Lady Wisdom, Proverbs closes with a lengthy description of a wife of noble character. In a number of respects, this description recalls the character of Ruth as she is presented in the Bible story.

Dr. Thomas McCreesh has listed the similarities between the two women—the biblical Ruth and the ideal wife of Proverbs 31.

1. Loyalty and Fidelity

Both women are paradigms of loyalty and fidelity. Ruth leaves behind her native home and religion for Naomi’s.

2. Resourcefulness

Both act with tremendous resourcefulness. Ruth provides a livelihood for herself and her mother-in-law, and secures heirs to carry on the family name.

3. Domestic Leadership

Both are portrayed in terms of their marriages, homes and families. The story of Ruth culminates in her marriage to Boaz and the birth of a son. In effect, she builds a house for herself and Naomi.

4. Noble Character

Finally, both women are praised for what they do. Boaz calls her blessed and declares her a “woman of noble character” (Ruth 3:11).
