Letters from prison have been a genre all their own throughout history. Jail cells often provide clarity of mind and perspective on what’s really important. Although we might think the injustice of being in jail would consume someone like Paul, we had a bit of a surprise. Paul was intensely focused on the wellbeing of the community he served. All of that relates to Paul’s understanding of his ultimate citizenship and his sense of kinship with believers everywhere.

We’ll now turn our attention to another major fixture in Roman life: slavery.
