Paul got pretty personal in this letter, didn’t he? Maybe you felt a bit uncomfortable as Paul leaned on his old friend Philemon. We trust that understanding some ancient conventions of letter-writing and ancient understandings of reciprocity put this letter in perspective.

Philemon opened up a lot of issues, but the most obvious was slavery. So let’s take a whole lesson to explore what Paul says about slavery in all of his letters.
