Well, what did you think? Maybe you weren’t completely satisfied with how Paul handled the topic of slavery. Did you think his interest in spiritual slavery and freedom avoided the issues? Would you have preferred that he was more definitive on the social institution itself?

Hopefully, getting some first century context made it possible to realize just how revolutionary the church’s message of kinship really was. The letter to Philemon got us started on the right track realizing that the church was the place where we are all brothers and sisters, exercising both our freedom and our service to each other.
