To have a more accurate understanding of purity in the ancient world, we have a couple of hurdles to get over. One is that we think of purity as a term related to hygiene. Once we realize it’s a spiritual category, the second hurdle is realizing it’s not just a religious idea. It was part of everyday life for religious people.
