One of the primary questions asked about criminal behavior is: What are the causes? The next two lectures will discuss different theories to explain criminal behavior and deviance. In this lecture, we will explore the classical, biological, psychobiological, psychological, and sociological theories. How you think about the causes of criminal behavior will influence how you treat it.

Lesson Objectives

When you complete this lesson, you should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the classical and neoclassical theories of criminology and how they influence the criminal justice system.
  • Describe the basic features of biological and psychological theories of crime causation.
  • Describe the basic features of sociological theories of crime causation.
