The OT is our foundation. Not only for the NT, but as a foundation in how we should live our lives, and examples of what to do, and not to do.
-
It is God’s eternal inspired Word that reveals Himself and which the whole NT is based.
-
The reason you should study the old testament is to understand the Lord.

Because God doesn’t change, we can study the Old Testament and learn who God is and who He says we are. It provides the foundation for the entire Bible and tells us how to live. Because the Old Testament answers questions about how life began, studying the Old Testament is where we should begin to be able to give an answer for what we believe.

The Old Testament tells the story of who God is, who we are as a human race, and our relation to God, the Creator. It reveals to us His incredible love for us, His unchanging character, His attributes, and His plans for all creation. The Old Testament is like a mirror as we, today, relate to the characters who walked with God and those who chose to continue rebellion against God. It reveals the true nature of our being and how God Himself deals with His people and sin. We can not understand Jesus without the Old Testament. Nor can we understand our need for Jesus without the Old Testament.

A lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weakens an understanding of the New Testament because it provides a foundation of God interacting with His people and seeking restoration.
-
The authors of the New Testament quote the Old Testament, and Jesus quotes the Old Testament. How can you understand what they are referencing and its significance without knowledge of the Old Testament.
-
It would be like reading a book and starting in the middle, not knowing fully the main character and characters of the story, let alone the author of the book itself.

A lack of knowledge of the OT weakens our understanding of the NT because the OT provides foundation for the whole bible and faith in Christ, tells us about Jesus and helps us know God. It also tells us how to live. We need all of this.
