The Old Testament is there for a reason, you cannot fully understand the New Testament without the foundational knowledge of the Old Testament. It is full of vital information to help you know God, historical facts, and more.

We should study the Old Testament for many reasons. The Old Testament helps us understand and know God more. We can see His deeds and miracles along with seeing the relationships He built with His people. It is very difficult or nearly impossible to love someone and have a deep relationship when you don’t know who that person really is. The Old Testament gives a facts, provides a biblical foundation, and helps us to understand the Loving God that we serve.

The questions about the importance of the Old Testament were questions that I asked when I first started to read the Bible for myself. It wasn’t until someone started to point out the connections between the Old Testament and the New Testament that the entire library of scripture came alive! We cannot understand the need for Jesus without the Old Testament and in the same way we cannot understand that the Law was never going to be perfectly followed.

The Old Testament tells us about God, answers questions about how life began, tells us how evil came into our world, contains prophesies of the Messiah, and inspires us to holy living.

Jesus consistently refers to scriptures of the OT in his lessons. To better understand His teachings, we must first have the understanding of the foundational scripture which explains some of His words.

We need to know where we came from and what God is expecting of us.

Jesus, Paul, and other writers of the New Testament refer to the Old Testament many times. Lack of knowledge in the OT is going to keep one from fully understanding what is being communicated to the audience and why. The bible is beautifully connected over 2000 years and 40+ authors who never met each other which is foundational for our faith. In addition, seeing the OT prophecies in scripture are massive faith builders for the believer especially when it comes to discovering person of Jesus.

We don’t see all the needs we have that Christ has met. We don’t understand all of the problems which means we don’t truly value the solution as much as we should.

It will be very difficult or impossible for us to understand the New Testament in many important facts if we do not read and study the Old Testament. The Old Testament clarifies the cause and the New Testament leads to the effect. It can be said that we must have the Old Testament to understand the New Testament.

To understand where we are better we must also understand where we have been…… that is applicable to the Old Testament
