It is our foundation. It shows us God’s character, who He is, what to do, what not to do, God’s sovereignty, His compassion, His kindness, His love, and His tender mercy. The OT shows how God makes provisions for us and how He loves us so much that He is willing to chasten so that we would get back on track.

It is the foundation of our faith
It gave us the understanding of the new Testament -
The Old Testament is all-inclusive in teaching God’s word.
Also, it is ALL scripture which is spoken and inspired by God as he spoke
to the prophets through the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Old Testament is the foundation for the New Testament.
Therefore, one needs to know the Old Testament in order to
understand the New Testament.

it helps us undrestand the foundation of our faith in God 2it makes us to know the creation history and how God made provision for man sin in the garden of Eden

It helps us understand the background for the faith we have today. It gives us an idea of who the God is that we have placed our faith in. It shows us that God uses dysfunctional people of who we also are. We can see His patience and love with His people as well as the importance of obedience.

a thought came to me that without the understanding of the Old Testament, we could misunderstand the writings of the New testament, misunderstand the message the writers in New Testament were bringing forward leaving us to interpret the New Testament from our own perspective and culture

Because knowledge empowers us to learn what the Old Testament ways and works of life is which enlightens our understanding to the reason for salvation and why Jesus came. It helps us to be informed so we don’t miss heaven.

An astonishing amount of the New Testament is simply quotations from and explanations of Old Testament passages. Jesus built his life upon the Old Testament and was constantly quoting and referencing it, showing that He considered it to be the Word of God. The Old Testament helps us see exactly how Jesus fulfills the promises of an anticipated Messiah and how He perfectly obeys God’s Law and lives a sinless, righteous life. The sacrificial system points forward to Jesus as our perfect, substitutionary sacrifice that is a propitiation for our sin.

It is too easy to take the Bible out of context. That was a major problem in the early church that Paul talks about and it is still a problem today. The OT was meant to set up the NT. Without it, the NT would not be nearly as special or powerful as we know it to be.
