Every Christian should study The Old Testament because it tells us about our God, His nature and character, through His mighty acts. As such, The Old Testament helps us to know God through factual knowledge, personal knowledge (through the experiences of others who walked with Him), and practical knowledge, by instructing us on how to live.

The Old Testament is a “Treasure House of Wealth”. It provides a foundation for the whole Bible and tells us about God and His nature and Character. It tells us about Jesus Christ and His purpose for coming and puts ministry into focus. It provides a foundation for faith in Christ and shows us how the Old and New Testaments tie together.

A lack of knowledge of the Old Testament would definitely weaken our understanding of the New Testament. We would be lacking a firm foundation upon which to build our understanding. Certain things in the New Testament cannot be fully understood or appreciated without first becoming acquainted with the Old Testament. New Testament understanding would be incomplete without the Old Testament. The New Testament is a fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecies. So not having knowledge of the Old Testament cheapens the New Testament.
