The Old Testament is the foundation of our faith. I can be read to further understand our God and it tells of Jesus. It is filled with prophesy and helps us to know God in a way that would be incomplete with only the New Testament. In so many ways it inspires, informs and it helps to affirm our faith.

We can learn more about God’s character. There are people in the Old Testament who are relatable to our race today. Hence “nothing new under the sun” phrase. It also prophecies what happens in the New Testament.

The reasons one should study the Old Testament because it reveals God’s character, sin, law of Moses, covenants, and most importantly the coming of Jesus Christ. Also, one will not be able to understand the New Testament without knowing the backstory of how it all began.

If you have not read the Old Testament, you will have no clue as to why the Father does things the way that he does. The New Testament would seem like you are reading about something new and disconnected from the oldest members of the Christian congregation meaning all of the Nation of Israel and the Tribe of Judah.

The Old Testament is referred to in the New Testament by Jesus and others. If we lack the knowledge of what is being said in these references, they are less influential to what is being spoken. Also, there are so many prophecies in the Old that come to life in the New.

We cannot fully understand or appreciate what God did through Jesus Christ our Savior without understanding Creation and sin and everything God did for the first 1400 years before Jesus came.

I think it cheapens grace.
To receive Jesus as my savior without having a full grasp of the understanding of what that means. The Old Testament adds color to black and white stories. Every reference adds a backstory.
I’ll cautiously compare it to waltzing into a culture different that your own and claim to understand because you read an infographic once.

How can we know what the prophecies are unless you have studied the Old Testament? You would have to know what has happened in the past, and understand who God is and what his future holds for us.
