Studying the Old Testament is essential for a deep and full understanding of the Bible, the nature of God, and the story of redemption as it points to Jesus.
-
To get to know God better and to learn more about his character. We also can learn more about how he is faithful in fulfilling his promises.
-
The God of the New Testament is the same God of the Old Testament. It is important to read and study the Old Testament because it helps us understand WHO God is and what He is like. The Old Testament points to Jesus, and is all part of God’s redemptive story. It shows us that the Bible is not about us, but it is all about Jesus.

The Old Testament shows you that God is there at the beginning of creation . It shows you God character. How God help his people out during the flood and doing the creation of the world. We find out , God is very faithful to His people and he fulfilled his promises to all his people. If you want to fulfilled Jesus in your life, you have to invite him in your heart and soul.

To fully understand who Jesus is and what He came to do; to understand God’s character; to understand humans in light of historical context.

One reason one should study the Old Testament is for the clarity of God’s Word and His precepts. For many years, I thought the Old Testament was not connected to the New Testament. In my learning in the Seminary, I learned that they are connected. I attend church every Sunday, Bible Study, and Vacation Bible School. Been in church my entire childhood. Why didn’t I know? I had a lack of knowledge. I just finished my first semester of seminary this week (May 5, 2025). I started out with Our Daily Bread when I felt the Holy Spirit nudging me to the Calling to go forth in the Ministry God is calling me to do 2 years ago. I am on break until Fall 2025, God willing. Now, I am studying more about God’s Word as I should as a student of Christ.

Wow, thank you for sharing! 💜And congratulations on completing your first semester! God bless

Why would a lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weaken our understanding of the New Testament?

As for me by not reading the OT I wouldn’t have clarity, nor understanding of the message in the NT. It’s like a tree growing up and I do not know how it became.
-
The Old Testament provides the foundation of truth; it helps us knowing about God, about Jesus and our faith in Christ.
-
A lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weakens our understanding of the New Testament because the New builds upon the foundation of the Old. Key themes, such as covenant, sacrifice, prophecy, and the identity of the Messiah, are rooted in the Old Testament. Without it, we miss the depth, context, and continuity of God’s redemptive plan through Jesus Christ.
-
Without it we would not know the fulfillment of scripture. When you have knowledge of what was prophesied in the OT and see it come to pass in the NT it builds your Faith. If you don’t know that Christ was the one said in the OT to come and die for our sin, you won’t appreciate it in the NT when Christ dies, and resurrects on the third day. We would believe anything instead of the one mentioned in the OT.

As I said to the question above the Old conceals the New reveals. to have a true grasp of Gods plan and sovereignty both have to be consumed and meditated on.
