To bring an understanding as to why, to build a foundation, and a clearer understanding of God and his message for us as followers.

For foundational context to being a Christian. As it was stated “In the beginning”, says it all, it is where we begin our faith.

Interesting question, I’m not sure how to answer the questions, but, I agree with the other two replies I just read. The Bible is God’s love letter to us, His people.

I need to know who God is and what is His purpose for my life. I need gain a better understanding of how I fit into my Christian life. What I should be doing or where He wants me to go. I also need the OT to have a greater knowledge of the NT.

To truly know oneself and purpose you must first know God’s nature his character because we are made in his image.

Christian Learning Center Forums Why would a lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weaken our understanding of the New Testament?

The New Testament is a reflection of the OT. The OT is a prophetic story of Jesus’ sacrifice. For example, the story of Isaac and Abraham on the mountain is a frame by frame pre-telling of Jesus crucifixion. The OT holds treasures that will deepen our knowledge and roots in Christ.

The Old Testament tells us about Jesus Christ. We cannot fully know about Christ and His purpose for coming into our world without studying the Old Testament.

You would not fully appreciate the grace of God and His sacrifice . You would also miss the 300 prophecies in the old testament that Jesus fulfilled. The nuances of how Jesus broke Jewish law to teach God’s true law, and how this lead into the Easter story, would be lost as well. Also, in the Old Testament, God gave the Jewish people opportunities to correct their behaviour and turn back toward Him, but time and time again they fell short, or were only able to return their love to Him for a period of time. So with this knowledge of the Old Testament, it will give a better understanding of why Jesus sacrifice was so critical, unexpected, and incredible in order to reconcile man to God.

If we do not know something, then how can we learn? If we are not exposed and taught; them how would we learn? Eliminate the Old Testament is to say that the beginning of things in not important. We would not be able to fully grasp GOD with only part of the story.
