A few reasons to study the old testament would include gaining factual, personal and practical knowledge about God. In addition out understanding of the Old Testament prepares a healthy foundation for the new testament to be built upon. Our awareness of Christ in the Old Testament makes the New Testament that much greater to enjoy because it points to, prophecies about and prepares for the ultimate King to come accomplish the purposes of God for salvation in history.

The Old Testament shows us our need for a savior. It also lays the foundation of God’s moral law in showing us what He expects from us when dealing with Him and our fellow man.

Not reading and understanding the OT makes reading the NT incomplete. Understanding that God and indeed Jesus was there from the beginning is important in our walk with God.

A lack of knowledge of the OT will weaken our understanding of the NT because the OT answers important foundational questions as to how did the world begin, the power of the Creator, the redemptive nature of God, the righteousness of God in punishing sin, the power and wisdom of God in weaving His redemptive plan through a people/nation, God’s dealings with man of common decent and royal decent, His power in communicating the future through prophecy and 100% perfection in revealing these truths as prophesied. Without the OT we would not understand that our first father Adam sinned and that all mankind since needs to be rescued from sin and that God has been working these 6K years to redeem man through the sacrifice of His messiah, His Son Jesus. And by seeing God’s fulfillment of OT prophecies we can know with certainty that Christ’s second coming is assured.

A lack of knowledge of the OT can affect the understanding of the NT because they are one and the same. They are not standalone books by themselves, they both make up the Bible as a whole. There were 400 years of silence between the OT and the NT however, the need for both books is cohesiveness. The foundation of the NT is built in the OT and the comprehension of the OT is solidified by the new teachings of the NT and Jesus’ words, ministries, and teachings.

As a Jew, Jesus studied and preached from the books of the Old Testament. Furthermore, Jesus was the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy.

We would lack the foundation, the history and the character development. It’s like walking into a movie half way through and trying to figure out what is going on. You would experience the conclusion but have no idea how truly great the whole movie was.
