What are some reasons one should study the Old Testament?

We should study the Old Testament because that where it all started. Just like the readings mentioned, it is the foundation for the rest of the story of the Bible. It tells us what’s going to happen in the future and why and it gives us background information for the rest of the books in the New Testament, since certain passages in the New Testament make reference to things that happen in the Old Testament. For example: if you wanted to read a book series you wouldn’t start in the middle of the series. You would instead start from the beginning and work yourself up so you can understand it better.

It is important to know and understand how the New Testament came into existence. It gives us a clear understanding of how we came into existence and who we are and what we believe. It is a solid foundation for us to stand on and build our faith as we wait for Jesus.

To understand the beginning of the love redemptive story of the Father, the Old Testament shows that the Trinity was evident, man faltered but God still loved them, the prophecy of the coming Messiah and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit

The Old Testament is part of God’s Word so there is information in it to help us understand a more complete picture of the story God is writing. It gives an account of creation, which tells us so much about who God is, how we came to be, and the relationship he desires to have with us. It paves the way for the New Testament.

Old Testament reveals why we needed Jesus and the New Testament.

Without knowledge of the Old Testament we wouldn’t have the understanding of why God gave us Jesus.

The writers of the New Testament refer to scripture, and the Old Testament was the only scripture they had. If we don’t have knowledge and understanding of the Old Testament then we don’t have the full picture of the message the New Testament conveys. The Old Testament is the ‘foundation of truth’, the New Testament ‘builds the super-structure’.
