Without understanding the Old Testament we lack full context of the whole bible story. So much of why God does what he does is explained in the lives of Old Testament characters and people. We see the value of trusting God and his plan for man.

You build knowledge on a foundation. The OT is our foundation. You must know the history, the story, to understand the NT. The OT gives us the truth and facts about Jesus so we can apply it to our lives as we read the NT. Without an understanding of the OT you have nothing to build on when reading the NT.

Without the OT, Jesus’ teachings have no context, and his sacrifice has no meaning. And without understanding the story of Israel, we can grossly misinterpret the teachings and events of the NT by reading them through our own cultural context.

We would not understand the history of God’s people, the way that sin impacted them as well as God’s response. How and why God responds to His people teaches us more about Him.
We also learn of the importance of a Savior, why we were lost and needed redemption. We learn about the hope of the Lord and the setting of the stage to His coming although He is there throughout. -
We wouldn’t have the foundational knowledge as to why God had to come down from Heaven in human form when He delivered His Son Jesus Christ to us in order to establish a new covenant with us that would permanently end the practice of sacrifice with Jesus’ death on the cross.
