The Old Testament is vital is understanding the whole counsel of God and the whole story of God. It tells the story of God’s people but it also tells the story of the origins of sin, of humanity, of the world, and of the need we have in Jesus coming to earth as the Messiah.

The Old Testament teaches the beginning, but it also foretells the future. It tells about the coming of Jesus.

Genesis emphasises that life did not exist until God created it. The Old Testament explains that although God loves us we in return have a duty to respect and love Him. His laws and rules are clearly stated. His justice is demonstrated. The punishment for sin is shown to us when we read what happened to Adam & Eve when they disobeyed Gods single command. The Old Testament is full of examples of how God has rewarded people who have listened to His commands and guidance and how those who did not listen perished.

One should study the Old Testament simply because it’s the beginning of all things, ALL THINGS! The Old Testament is the only way to come to know God, Yahweh. The Old Testament begins with God and then everything else after that. It’s so important to know our beginning and foundation.

To understand the nature and character of God.
To fully grasp the nature of sin and our need for redemption
To understand Gods plan for Israel
To see Gods unchanging promises and faithfulness to those who have faith in Him
To understand Gods desire for us and His holy standards

Failure to understand the Old Testament weakens…
1. One’s appreciation of the Christian faith
2. One’s knowledge about God, His plan, will and promises
3. A persons resolve to God’s standards
4. Ones understanding of redemption as it unfolds through various covenants and situations. -
The OT shows us who God is, the history of the Israelites, and why we needed a savior in Jesus Christ. It also prophecies Jesus and His coming.

A lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weakens our understanding of the New Testament because we miss the history laid out before the New Testament that is essential to understanding the New Testament in its proper historical context. The Old Testament is full of history that points to the purpose of Jesus coming to earth and the need for a savior. It is rich in prophesy of the coming of Christ and gives us new depth to understand the context in which Jesus and his disciples lived and how the Lord had been moving throughout history leading to the coming of Jesus.

The Old Testament tells the story of God’s people, their rebellion, their demands to have a king to rule over them, their disobedience and excile. But God loved them and the promise of eternal love evident in the birth, death and resurrection of His only Son Jesus Christ as reported in the New Testament.
We are no different from the Old Testament people always seeking our own council.
If it was not for the fulfillment of the Old Testament promise of through the death and resurrection of Christ we would not receive eternal life. -
The New Testament is the fulfillment of the Old Testament.
