You study the OT to get the factual, historical information needed to understand the NT. The OT is where you learn about God, creation and Jesus. You cant build without a foundation. The OT is the foundation.
-
To understand God’s character, man’s nature, and Jesus’ purpose
-
Knowing God as best as we can will help us to become closer to Him.
-
To learn who God is and to learn how the Old Testament sets the stage for Jesus’ arrival.
-
1. God’s character is revealed clearly
2. We are very much like the Israel. Understanding them, their struggles and God’s work will help us live our lives better.
3. The Gospel is not good news without the old testament.

The lack of knowledge of the Old Testament will provide no foundation for understanding the New Testament knowledge of Jesus and why God gave us his son. We would not understand that Jesus, the son of God, was always present. We would not know the truth of God’s plan for redemption and reconciliation with the Old Testament background. We also see ourselves in the Old Testatment. The Old Testament is looking forward to the New Testament.

The Old Testament is like a House and Jesus is the key. The OT reveals the foundation of truth of God’s plan and character. We can see Jesus in the OT too! The New Covenant and Testament often points back so we can understand.
-
Because Jesus is revealed through the Prophets and events in the OT. His coming is foretold with acute accuracy.
-
A lack of knowledge of the Old Testament would lead us to read and interpret the New Testament through our own lenses and distortions, rather than through the proper context in which it was to be interpreted through!
-
Because without the knowledge of the Old Testament we can not fully understand the New Testament. The Old Testament really lays the foundation.
