The old testament provides the foundation for the entire Bible, it also teaches us about Jesus Christ and Predicts his coming, puts his ministry into focus, preview his sacrifice for sin and tells of his judgment of the world and he’s coming kingdom. It also provides the foundation for the faith in Christ

The Old Testament is the foundation for the Messiah. It gives our history and our need for a savior. We can also see ourselves in the books written there.

The Old Testament is the foundations of creation. God’s character is made known. We discovers what God’s plan and expectations are looking forward. The Old Testament helps us to know where we are going. The Old Testament provides the knowledge of sin through God’s ten commands which are the foundational commands that help us to understand our sin nature.

The Old Testament is still the word of God! The OT reveals God’s will, character, and morale law. We see the rich history of the covenant with Abraham and Israel. We see a glimpse of the future, and it all points to Jesus.

Christian Learning Center Forums Why would a lack of knowledge of the Old Testament weaken our understanding of the New Testament?

A lack of knowledge of the Old Testament would leave us as Christians with a far murkier picture of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, as the Old Testament reveals him through much (if not all) of its passages through means of history, poetry and prophecy. Likewise, according to the lecture the Old Testament provides the foundation on which the New Testament is the superstructure – without the foundation of the Old the significance and truth of the New is not as apparent. And lastly, from my personal experience and spiritual upbringing in the church, the Old Testament is always relevant as a way of understanding where we come from, it sets the basis of how we as God’s people should live in contrast to the rest of the world and it reveals our need for a savior to help us live in that way that is holy and acceptable to God.

Because the New Testament is written on the premise of the Old Testament, and the Old Testament is written on the premise that the New Testament will be written after it.

We wouldn’t be able to get a glimpse into why the need a Messiah. It gives us a look at how sin messed up things for mankind and the need for Christ’s blood to be an atonement for our sin and to reconcile us to the trinity. It is also needed so that we can understand how important it is to build our faith in God through the knowledge of His Word. The Old Testament explains History, poetry, and prophecy that we can build a firm foundation and add to it by then going on to the New Testament.

The Old testament opens the door for us to understand who Christ truly is. Also by reading and understanding the Old Testament it allows us to know who God really is and his character and why he sent Christ to die for us. It gives the foundation for the laws that Christ himself came to fulfill

A lack of knowledge would weaken our understanding of the New Testament because we don’t know the back story of the Old Testament. In the New Testament, there are frequent references made from the Old Testament, that without reading it, it wouldn’t make since to us.
