Why do you think geography has been given so little attention by Bible readers?

I think the reason why so many readers of the Bible give so little attention to the geographical connections to the text comes from their desire to know the teachings of the Bible as it relates to our relationship with God. Many times we read about a place or geographic feature and we care less about that then what the text is trying to reveal about God and our relationship to Him. It doesn’t seem like the “main” thing and often falls into the same category as some of the cultural practices and historic references when it comes to our interest in it.

Not as much attention is focused on the time period when Jesus was on the earth as to the volume of what he was preaching to the people. His followers were looking for a Leader to lift them immediately out of the morass called their life, then they were at looking of the future of a Christ like life.

I believe that the Bible focuses more on a relationship with Jesus Christ. The importance of being an example for living for Jesus Christ and being available to be used.

I have been fortunate to have had several Bible teachers who have recognized the importance of geography to understanding scripture. I’m excited to learn more about how geography has impacted the lives of those I read about each day in scripture.

Physical geography: to understand the significance of God parting the Red Sea, to understand about the cedars of Lebanon that were required to restore the City gates of Jerusalem, to understand the places that were important in the life of Christ during passion week. To understand when the disciples set across the lake, when Jesus walked on the water to them- the distances that they had to row. To understand the mission journeys of Paul that the distances he traveled … and so many more.

Physical geography: 1 Samuel 23:26, “Saul was going along one side of the mountain, and David and his men were on the other side, hurrying to get away from Saul.” This was the geography of the terrain at En Gedi.
Human geography: Matthew 3:12, “His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Natural history: Proverbs 30:26, “hyraxes (rock badgers) are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags.”

For physical geography, we see the storms coming over the disciples when they were in the boat in the Sea of Galilee. For human geography, we can trace the journey that Abraham took to move from Haran to Canaan. For natural history, David illustrate his thirst for God like the deer panting for water in Psalm 42.

Genesis 10 lays out the nations which descended from Noah. The Bible names the people and the land in which they inhabit. This is a trend that continues throughout the Old Testament regarding people and the land they inhabit. Think of Abraham and the land he is promised by God, think of the lands we read about as he travels to the promised land, think of the land in which Lot settles and how the culture he chose to surround himself with, ultimately leads to the destruction of most of his family.

Ps 133:3
As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion

I live in the suburban area of St. Louis, Missouri. Physical geography: we have a lot of trees, we have the Meramec River nearby that has and can flood in torrential rain periods.
Human Geography: There are a number of individual farms that grow fruits and raise animals for meat. We have the option of contacting these farms to buy directly, however I am lazy and buy at the local Fresh Thyme store. Individual homesteads have their own hens to lay eggs. I buy some from a friend who has hens.
Natural History: We have beautiful flowering fruit trees, in the spring you can see the daffodils coming out early. We have lots of wooded areas with wildlife such as deer, squirrels, rabbits, bobcats, owls, and hawks to name a few. -
Physical Geography in TN includes tree lined hills and snaking rivers.
Human geography in the Nashville area include bridges spanning large areas, and wealthy homes in desirable hill country with perfect views.
Natural History encompasses loud finches that song well before the sun comes up, and deer which are a regular hazard and nuisance for humans, but their natural habitat has been invaded. -
I live in TX. Here it is extremely hot during the summer. Depending upon which part of the state you live in though, the landscape will be a little different. In the western part of the state, in El Paso, it is very hot and dry with very little rainfall or precipitation. So you have a desert climate there. In the north central part of Texas in the Dallas area, there are more storms and precipitation so the landscape tends to be more green. In the central part of Texas it is a combo. During the summer it can be really hot and dry, but in the spring and winter, there can be some rain and snow, and even severe storms. If you live on the southern coast of TX, you get to experience the ocean and beaches.
Texas is considered a southern state, so is often equated with country people, but there is actually a variety of cultures in the state. There seems to be an increase in the use of solar panels in the region I live. We have a lot of Tex-Mex food here and BBQ.
There are a lot of cattle on the landscape here. Other animals include deer and vultures. Depending upon which region you live in Texas will determine what kind of plants you see. There are cactus in the dryer regions, but one of the most beloved flowers is the bluebonnet, which is the state flower.
