Why do you think geography has been given so little attention by Bible readers?

I think one reason is that we don’t understand fully the importance of geography in the Bible. We often look at it as though it is an interesting fact, but not as something that will aid our understanding.
-
First, I don’t agree that there has not been much attention paid to geography in reading the Bible. I believe that it depends on the specific faith you were brought in, and the particular messengers one has heard. Nevertheless, I think that people are generally taught to focus on the words, not the environmental factors, or the history behind those words. History played a big role in the formation of the Christian Faith. Sometimes the message taught is more literal., without emphasizing environmental, historical and political factors behind events, like the exodus of the Israelites, or the repeated use of animals like the sheep to a Biblical message.

Because the location of the text doesn’t seem as important as the actual content being taught.
-
Because humans like excitement, drama, and action in their stories so they don’t stop to consider the geography that is contained in them.
-
I know I have not paid much attention because I did not think it mattered very much. Geography felt like fact & science. I was not going to scripture for science. But, with wisdom that perspective has shifted!

Luke 12:27 Consider the lilies, how they grow. They neither toil nor spin.
Also the crossing of the Red Sea, calming of the storm, any stories dealing with Samaria. -
Jesus was sleeping in the back of a boat with the disciples on board in the sea of Galilee. A terrible storm rose and terrified those who were in the boat with him. They woke Jesus up to see if he might be able to do something. He told them to stop living through fear, and then told the wind and the waves to be at peace. All was calm and quiet on the body of water now after Jesus had commanded the squall to stop. The disciples were amazed. The sea of Galilee was featured in the story. Human geography was featured in the story, showing the disciples and Jesus traveling via the sea of Galilee. Locations were labeled as they travel on the sea of Galilee: which is also part of human geography. The disciples interacted with, and responded to geography, As the wind whipped up a terrible storm on this body of water.

Psalm 22:12
Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me. This text is using geography as a reference to an attack of the pagan religions of Og king of Bashan from Numbers, which included Baal worship. Describing them as powerful forces, like strong bulls. -
In the book of John’s first chapter, John the Baptist is preaching and baptizing in the wilderness and then in Bethany east of the Jordan River, baptizing people in the water there, when Jesus appears for baptism. Afterwards, God used a dove to rest the Holy Spirit upon His Son.
