Christian Learning Center Forums Commenting on death, Dallas Willard said, “Death is avoided in common discussions by human beings because it is the ultimate failure. At death you face the fact you are not God, you do not run the universe. Death is the ultimate vulnerability.” In what ways have you seen people express their sense of vulnerability when considering their own death or the death of someone they care about? Do you agree with the statement: “At death you face the fact you are not God”? Explain your answer.

I disagree with the statement : At death you face the fact you are not God. I know for a fact as I type this, I am not God. There is only one God and I am not Him. I don’t need to face death to know that. However, at the same time when death takes a loved one, or threatens to take a loved one, the realization that you are not in control is overwhelming.

Yes; there is only one God. The only way for us to know what happens after death is what the Bible tells us.

The stages of grief about people’s own mortality are all experienced to some degree by people that know they’re going to die. My friend is dying from stage 4 colon cancer. She is in her forties and has a wonderful husband and children. She has been focused on fighting her illness but has resolved to die and is somber as of late.

We face death every day and if a person has not reconciled their sin with God, I can see how one would think about not overseeing their own transience. This thought about not being God is subjective to the life one has lived. If a person is saved, they already know God in their heart and understand that there is an entity larger than themselves.

Death is the great equalizer. It comes to the powerful and the weak, the rich and the poor, and nothing one can do can prevent it. Anything good that one possesses here on earth will pale in comparison to what they have in heaven, or if they are not a believer, is the only good that they will ever have as there will be an eternity without goodness awaiting them.

Death is a very humbling experience. Even the most powerful of men are brought low by this enemy. They find that they are powerless to change the reality of death. In essence, they realize that they are not God.

Christian Learning Center Forums Doug Groothuis stated, “Our culture is very interested in life after death. You think of the interest in near-death experiences, in attempting to communicate with spirit guides or higher beings, or I think some of the interest in extraterrestrial life is really rooted in a desire to transcend the limitations of this life.” Do you agree with Doug Groothuis’ statement? Why or why not? Can you think of other theories that speak to the human need to survive death? What are they? Why are those views held?

Yes, I agree. Everyone is afraid because we cannot escape our death on this planet and so we want to know where we will be going. And if Christ is not at the center of your life, you will look for other ways to find answers and still you are unsatisfied after seeing those. I have seen some people say there os nothing, we just go unconsious and that is it. Seems like they are trying to conquer their fear, when they, if they faollwed Christ, could have it all

I think when people don’t have a solid foundation to base their thoughts on life after death, they grasp at anything they can.

I agree with his statement because it seems we humans are always searching for meaning in our lives, and we all seem to have an innate fear of death, of ceasing to exist and a will to continue an existing. Reincarnation, cryogenix, mummification and ancestral spirit worship are other theories that speak to the human need and desire to cheat death. I believe these views are held for the same reason all life beyond death views or held, our desire to exist for all eternity.

I agree with Groothuis’s statement, suggesting that people are interested in life after death or extraterrestrial life because they have a desire to transcend the limits of this life. I agree with this because this is one of the places I’ve observed non-believers turn when they are trying to process the meaning of life. Specifically, I’m thinking about the idea of reincarnation. It’s okay to die, because we will all come back again as something else and live infinite lives.
Through my faith in Jesus Christ, I do not believe in reincarnation or other theories, but it is something I’ve observed.

I do ageree with Mr. Groothuis. People are interested in life after death because we want to know that this was all worth it and there has to be more. I believe in God’s word when he says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” John 14:1-4.
With that I am comforted and will see my loved ones who has gone before me. We should all take comfort in His words!
