Digging In

Read: Romans 13:8-10.

Which of the commands listed in verse 9 help a Christian to fulfill the law of God? Are some more important than others? Are there other commands not listed in the text? What are they?

Love does not harm a neighbor. When you love your neighbor as yourself, you fulfill the law of God. What happens when things go wrong? How do you make things right? Has this happened with you? Has the same experience happened previously? With what effects?

Love is described in both positive and negative ways. What are some of the positive things you might do to keep God’s law completely with your family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors?

Going Further

This lesson summarizes that “because Scripture is so staggeringly point-blank honest in its evaluations” we are either drawn to the Bible or we run from it. Which happens to you more frequently? What would you like to happen more often?

The Lesson One video concludes: “Scripture was not written for those who want simple answers or an easy, optimistic view of religion and human nature.” In your view, why was Scripture written? How has the Bible’s credibility been realized in your life?

Final Thoughts

The lesson of the Bible is primarily a lesson of human failure and human need for God. Even though we might in our hearts really want to do right, we often do wrong. How has this been true in your life? If change is needed, which areas are most important?
