Not too many. Growing up in a small town here in Maine there were small groups of people who would
harass us because of our faith but nothing like that was happening in the New Testament times.

None of the challenges surprise me. I live in a smaller southern town with multiple churches, most of which are some form of the Baptist faith. It is interesting to hear what the stated differences are when working with the groups from each church. I teach in a small Christian school, and many of my students come from those churches, so our biblical discussions can be very lively. I remind my kids to listen and be open-minded when we get into doctrine and church politics.

None of these challenges were overly surprising to me. However, the extent that Christians are persecuted was alarming. I can not relate to those extremes but I am often judged by unbelievers in my day to day life.

Although two of the letters to the churches in Revelation addressed the challenge of lukewarmness and losing the first love of Christ and appealing to the lesser Christian concerns, I never thought about this as being as great of a challenge as heretical teachings. But I was wondering why in the area which I live, which is North America, why there is little deep seeking to know scripture and deep desire to meet as a body for prayer. I think that this challenge came more into focus to me, as we in North America have great freedom to worship and proclaim Jesus, yet we have become complacent and lukewarm; no longer with an urgency to seek and know Jesus and His word.

One of the most surprising challenges described in the lesson is the extent of persecution faced by Christians, particularly how it often leads to growth and resilience. This is especially relevant in places like China and Nigeria. In China, Christians face government restrictions and surveillance, which can create pressure to conform to societal norms. Despite this, many believers find strength in their faith, often leading to vibrant underground movements.
In Nigeria, the Church faces intense persecution from extremist groups, which has resulted in a strong sense of community among believers. This mirrors the historical challenges of the early church, where adversity often spurred growth.
Both scenarios highlight how, despite opposition, faith communities can adapt and thrive, reflecting the enduring resilience of the church throughout history.
