Why is it important to understand who Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount were meant to apply to?

I think Jesus gave the Sermon of the Mount to make aware those in attendance the rules of Godly living and eventually pass it forward to anyone who would hear.

Jesus’ teachings in the Sermon on the Mount were meant to apply to his believers. The Beatitudes is a guide to follow as a Christian.

So not to impose them on others who are not able to abide by them

It is important to understand how Jesus’ teaching were directed because we defined the standards or expectations for that specific group. Also, then the group which the sermon is directed have the parameters to follow the indicated direction.

If these beatitudes are geared to a specific group of people, then 1) are we part of that group and 2) if we are not part of that group, then why would they be important for us?
