I always that Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees and Saducees when he was speaking of the woes. I learned that the woes are for anyone who has no thought for anyone except themself. Therefore, they can not be true followers of Jesus.

Reading the accounts in both Luke and Mathew provide consistent clear messages about expectations for believers and how we are to live our lives. We must embrace the teachings of Jesus and as we do, we can expect God’s blessings. We will experience persecution in this world and should set our sights on things above and the treasures in the Kingdom of Heaven.

There seems to be a much more personal aspect to Luke’s account. It almost specifically calls out each person who fits within the descriptions given, “you who”. There’s no denying when you are exactly that category.

It seems as though the Beattitudes in Luke are more personal where the Beattitudes in Matthew are more of the spiritual kind. Luke uses the term “Blesses are you who” instead of “Blessed are those who.” There is also a spiritual and a social dimension in the Beattitudes, the pious and the physical dimension.

I appreciate that this pointed out that these are expected in the community of Christians and not just the individuals. All too often, we think we are islands out there doing good and being sacrificial, but it is greater when we work together with other believers toward the same purpose, to bless others and reach them with the love of our God!
