It helps us understand the Jew’s reactions to Jesus and to the early church writers. We can also understand that God was not absent during that time, even if Christian writing was sparse.

Four hundred years is a long time to be silent. Knowing what took place during that time helps you bridge the gap between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

I agree, 400 years is a very long time! I would have loved living during Jesus’ time! But, I’m glad that I’m alive now!

Any time we study a book of the Bible, it’s always important to know what went on during that time for better understanding.

My understanding of this period is crucial to my understanding and interpretation of the New Testament. I have to know the context of the situation the people were living through and the events that were taking place to understand the events of the New Testament better.

It’s important to understand what was taking place socially, politically and religiously from when the OT was completed and the NT began. By understanding the historical context of those years, I think it will give me a better understanding of the cultural mindset just prior to Jesus’ arrival.

I think exegesis will help to flesh out the books. It will help me to have a secure understanding of what has been written, and allow for me to explain it to others better.

For me, knowing the historical background is what would help the most. It helps put things into perspective.

Theology is one of the 4 types of questions that interested me the most. I believe it’s because I tend to think what lessons could be learned from what I’m reading.

I believe the contemporary application stands out to me the most because I am always curious as to how this document, as old as it is, applies to the present time. I think that learning how it is applicable today guides my understanding of present events and situations greatly.

I believe understanding the context of scripture is most helpful as the first step in applying it to our current culture and lives. If we do not answer the question of how these words would have been perceived by their original audience, we can get off track quickly.
