What advice would you give a new Christian who wants to read the book of Revelation?

I would suggest they do not take everything in this book literal, to not only read, but to study with concordances, study bible and other materials relating to the book of Revelation.

As a new Christian, Revelations is very exciting. I would recommend reading the gospel of John first, and the book of Romans second. This order will introduce the new Christian to who Jesus is and the unending grace and love that he is. Once the new Christian understands this, then to speak with the pastoral team about where to go from there.

Read the rest of the New Testament and understand that our God is a forgiving and loving God. The things written in Revelation are not to be feared if you understand them and if you have trusted Jesus as your personal savior. Pray hard for God to give you understanding and peace as you read.

I would say pray before reading. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and reveal His message to you. To bring clarity and understanding. I would also recommend talking to your pastor. Also, read other commentaries or about about Revelations to get a better understanding

Raed it through. Then reread it. Ask the Holy Spirit for understanding, wisdom and knowledge as you reread and reread. Also encourage then to allow someone who is called in the surface of helping them to understand and navigate the scriptures can assist them as well.

I had always been puzzled about the relationship between the seven seals, the seven trumpets, and the seven bowls. As Dr Blomberg, the sixth in each set is so catastrophic that it is hard to follow one set after the other. His suggestion of overlap in that the sixth item releases the next set of judgments is quite plausible to me. Equally new is his perspective of looking at the 144,000 and the multitude who come out of the tribulation as one and the same.

This better explained the possible beliefs of people and that it is Revelation – not plural.

I actually learned quite a bit about John that I did not know, and the letter of 3 John that illustrates 3 different types of Christians in the church. I also did not know the 7 churches make a cyclical area in Turkey, so the geography also helps to visualize this book. I also learned that not everything is completely now, and we must look to the Holy Spirit to help guide and interpret. What I thought was fascinating was the verse about being “lukewarm” and how the area of the church was written to was known for its waters being lukewarm.

It was interesting to find out about the very different views (i.e. preterist, futurist, historicist, idealist; postmillennialist, amillennialist, and premillenialist) and various interpretations that are out there. It was quite an eye opener to discover which of these my own views fit into!

I was surprised to learn that there is, apparently, significant evidence for a post-tribulation interpretation of Revelation and that this is the interpretation taken by Our Daily Bread University.
I did not know that “apocolypse” was a well-known literary form in the New Testament world.
