The differences between John and the Synoptic Gospels are so distinct that it looks as though either John was almost writing in a complete vacuum or that he was taking for granted that his audience was fully aware of the Synoptics.

But in case you’re wondering what the differences are, approximately 90 percent of the content in John is unique compared to the other three Gospels. Below is a list of differences and similarities between John and the other three.

Different

  • John barely mentions the kingdom.
  • John doesn’t have any exorcisms.
  • John’s beginning and end of Jesus’ ministry is set during Passover.
  • The Temple is cleansed in the beginning of John and at the end of the other Gospels.
  • John includes Jesus saying that you need to eat my body and drink my blood. (However, his Gospel doesn’t include a Eucharist or communion episode during the final night with disciples.)
  • John doesn’t mention a last supper, but instead includes a long section (chapters. 13–18) when Jesus is with his disciples addressing them during the last night before His arrest.
    • He washes their feet.
    • He talks about the vine and the branches.
    • He says I am the only way.
    • He talks about the Holy Spirit coming to live with them.

Similar

  • Temple cleansing
  • The healing of a Centurion servant or a royal official’s son
  • Feeding of the 5,000
  • Walking on the water
  • Jesus anointed at Bethany
  • Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem
  • The miraculous catch of fish
  • The Passion
  • The Crucifixion and the Resurrection
