Although we’ve been thinking about some big theological terms, it’s been helpful to consider how common they would have been to first century readers: slavery and bondage; justification, redemption and freedom. These are graphic and emotional terms that could shape someone’s understanding of what salvation really is. 

Understanding the legal or “forensic” dimension of our faith is the right place to start in this journey through Romans. But what about the “occasion” of the letter? Let’s take up this question in the next lesson.
