After Paul left Ephesus, there were already false teachers filling the ranks. These were people seeking prominence and large followings. A lot of the drama was insider/outsider tension that probably had its roots in divisions between Jews and gentiles. As we make our way through Ephesians, keep this background in mind. The issue of unity will be central as Paul encourages the Ephesians to overcome the tension and divisions that have haunted them in the past:

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
