Read Philippians 2:1-13.

  1. What stands out about the middle section of this passage, verses 6-11, which appears in the middle of Paul’s instruction to the Philippians?
A Christ Poem in Philippians

In Philippians 2:1-13, Paul seems to be referring to something his audience would already be familiar with. This selection is a freestanding poem and the fact that Paul uses this to support his instruction means it has traction and authority with his audience. It appears to be an early Christian liturgy or hymn that early believers would have recited and known long before they encountered Paul.
