If you thought metaphor and imagery were dispensable “condiments” for the “real food” of biblical revelation, you’re in for another lesson on cultural context to prove otherwise.

To answer the biggest questions in the Bible, writers across all genres use figures of speech: What is God like? What does it mean to follow Him? What does it mean to reject Him? Who are His people? What is their behavior like?

In this lesson, we’ll briefly review some of the major metaphors that explain the character and behavior of God and the implications for His people. Then we’ll dig into almost everyone’s favorite image of God and His people.
