Jesus’ claim of “I AM” reveals his divine authority and identity as God of the Old Testament. He was not merely a prophet or teacher but God Himself. So Jesus saying ” I AM” reinforces that He came to fulfill the promises and prophecies of the Old Testament. Ultimately this means that as we as believers, as we read the Bible, we should not think of it as a collection of separate books but as a unified narrative of God’s redemptive work. It one STORY. The STORY of Jesus the Christ who came to save us from sin and eternal punishment.

Jesus fulfilled the law but that does not negate God’s law and that it should be followed. We should still see God’s Law as the way in which we are supposed to live our lives, but now with the knowledge that it has been fulfilled by the very same Creator.
-
Jesus through his life, death and resurrections fulfilled the requirements of the Old Testament Law. In the New Covenant , the Holy Spirit guides believers to live righteously, not through external adherence to the Law, but through internal transformation. You see God does not just want our obedience but He wants our heart as well. We are called to be obedient out of love and gratitude for what Christ has done.
-
While Jesus has fulfilled God’s Law, we need to be careful NOT to take advantage of that. We still need to abide by His laws as it honors the sacrifice that Jesus has made.
-
Jesus did not come to do away with the law, but to fulfill the law. When we fell from grace in the garden, we were subject to the covenant of the law. As our redeeming Lord, Jesus did what we could never do. As our perfect sacrifice Jesus offers the new covenant of grace in order to save us from ourselves. So that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” The law of carnal commandments and much of the ceremonial law were fulfilled at the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
-
We should not see it from a punitive perspective but consequential in nature. To the redeemed we have escaped the penalty of the letter of the law.

What can we learn from Thomas being skeptical about Jesus’ resurrection?

That Thomas was human, just like us; we are fallible people who have anxieties. We are called to trust God and we can pray to Him to continue to work through our fallibilities such as skepticism of Christ.
-
Thomas’ skepticism is a natural human reaction to extraordinary claims. Jesus’ reaction to Thomas was one of compassion and patience. It highlights the importance of being compassionate and patient with those who do not believe. We need to react to doubters just like Jesus did. It is a powerful testament to God’s patience and willingness to help us in our faith journey.

If we have doubts, we should pray and trust in God. We should believe that he is a healer

What encouragement do we gain from Jesus’ high priestly prayer?

Jesus’ high priestly prayer found in John 17 is highly encouraging. Jesus not only prays for his disciples but for all believers across time. It affirms that we are loved by God, and it offers a deep sense of worth and security in God’s unchanging love and protection. This prayer encourages believers by assuring us of His protection, fostering unity, guiding us in sanctification, affirming God’s love, offering hope of future glory (that our present troubles are temporary), and demonstrating Jesus’ ongoing intercession for us. These aspects of His prayer provide profound comfort, strength, and purpose for the Christian life.
