Jesus the Good shepherd is one that we can rely upon no matter what or where we are. We can depend upon Him to supply our every need and guide us through the dangers of life. He is always there to depend upon for protection and resources as we travel through this earthly life. there is none greater than the Good Shepherd.

Having witnessed many, many scenes of flocks of sheep and goats being herded, shepherded by humans; the effect the serenity of the landscape and the peace and quiet has on the animals, is soothing, relaxing and comforting. Just so, the Lord, truly my Shepherd, assures me that all is well, all is well, it is well with my soul. I just have to trust in Him, believe in Him, and stay close to him when He is guiding me on my life’s path.

Jesus leads us as the Good Shepherd to all good things that we need -not always what we want or THINK we need – and His provision for us is perfect. He knows us and can provide everything if we just allow Him to lead the way, lean on Him, and have faith.

David understood exactly what it meant to be a GOOD shepherd and he described one in Psalm 23. Just as the ancient shepherds of David’s time protected and led their sheep through a dangerous land, our Lord leads us to quiet waters, lush pasture, through danger and difficulty. God was faithful to David, so in his love, David wrote a psalm in praise of his God who cared for him just as the Good Shepherd cared for his sheep. In this same way, Jesus will continue to be faithful to all His followers; we have no need to fear, He will protect us.

The role of a Shepard is to tend and guide their flock. The sheep are safe when guided and tended properly.

The land is as much a character in the Biblical narrative as the people themselves.

Seeing the almost desolate arid area of the Judean wilderness, was revelational to me. I always though of the wilderness as being like our forests her in the US. Their wilderness is so much more harsh than those in my state.

It is difficult to imagine the hardship that the Jewish nation faced without first understanding where they lived and worked. The shepherd has a 24hr job to keep his sheep safe in such a difficult terrain.

Seeing the geography of the land brings the Scripture to life once again. It helps me to understand the context in ways I never would have before.
