Chances are, Abraham and Sarah were familiar to you. But did you learn anything new? Had you thought of them as “disciples” before?

They really did have to leave a lot behind to follow God—and unlike the disciples who left their nets to follow Jesus, the patriarchs rarely saw or heard from God. It’s been helpful to develop some empathy with these characters and to fill our theological imagination with accurate content so we can fully appreciate the decisions they were called to make.

Now we’ll turn to Isaac’s own son, the enigmatic figure of Jacob, in the next lesson.
