If you met someone today who tricked his blind father in order to claim his elder brother’s inheritance, what would you think of him? What if you learned that this wouldn’t be the only time he’d take advantage of his elder brother? 

The name of Abraham (father of nations) resounds through the centuries. So does the name of his grandson Jacob, renamed Israel. The Israelites take their name from him. He is another critical ancestor. He is just as complex as Abraham, perhaps more. And the name Israel travels down the generations as a characterization of all his descendants, including us. 

What can we learn about this ancestor that might also say something about ourselves? How do we make sense of this “heel grabber” and “one who struggles with God”, and what would his story have meant in its original context?
