With its drama, excitement and ultimate happy ending, it’s hardly surprising that the story of Joseph has attracted dozens of artists, musicians, playwrights and filmmakers. During the Renaissance, Michelangelo included Joseph in the famous Sistine Chapel frescoes. In 1743 the well-known composer George Frideric Handel wrote an oratorio (a story-telling piece of music) called Joseph and His Brethren. The Tony-nominated Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by Andrew Lloyd Weber is one of the most successful musicals of all time. In 2000, DreamWorks Pictures released Joseph King of Dreams, an animated film. It’s easy to recognize the powerful influence of Joseph’s story on the arts over the last few centuries.
