While the name of Israel originates with the patriarch Jacob, the origin of their national identity is more connected to Moses than any other figure. By the time he dies, they will be a free people with a covenant for living in the Promised Land in a theocracy. But the first step in this narrative is the calling of Moses to be God’s rescuer.
