The revelation of God’s name should not be taken lightly. A name in the ancient world was part of a person’s essential identity. God was revealing Himself as Israel’s patron deity, that is, as the God of their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But He also revealed His covenantal name YHWH afresh to Moses on Mt. Sinai. This was the name by which the Hebrews and the Egyptians would come to know the one true God. And that God, unlike Egypt’s limited and sometimes petty deities, was existence itself. He simply is. No other god could claim to exist before and outside all things as ultimate being.
