Proverbs is an ideal entry point to the Bible for those who are new to its story. It offers messages that ring true in a practical way. Proverbs provides “order in the tangle” of more complicated texts.

Across many genres and contexts, the Bible engages us in a diverse and sometimes chaotic-feeling storyline. While Job cries out to God, David murders a loyal friend and God’s chosen people continue to fail, Proverbs offers a touch point of equilibrium. Passages like the one mentioned from Leviticus require a fair amount of background to make sense. By comparison, the Proverbs are straightforward.

Whatever is happening in the Bible’s more situational contexts, Proverbs represents timeless truth. It keeps us anchored in the fluctuating drama of the biblical cosmos. If we have doubts in the other books about the world that the Bible’s stories inhabit, Proverbs provides balance and stability. It introduces universal values and norms, and hints at the order and consistency underlying the Bible’s historical settings.
