What we get in Proverbs is not a different value system from the books we’ve seen to this point, but a different perspective and genre.

Compare several Proverbs with related passages from Deuteronomy below.

Deuteronomy 6:6-9 (NIV)Proverbs 6:20-23 (NIV)
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. (6:6-7)My son, keep your father’s command
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. Bind them always on your heart; fasten them around your neck. (6:20-21)
Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. (6:7)When you walk, they will guide you;
    when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you. (6:22)
Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (6:8-9)For this command is a lamp,
    this teaching is a light,
and correction and instruction
    are the way to life. (6:23)
