While Jerusalem doesn’t ultimately fall until it’s captured and destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC, the 701 siege by the Assyrians is a sign of things to come. In the north, Israel has been sent off into exile as divine judgment for its infidelity to YHWH. In the South, Judah has a chance to repent, but it too will continue in cycles of disobedience leading to its judgment just over 100 years later.
