The Hebrew word, khatta’ah, is found in each of the first exercise’s verses. It’s found twelve times in Isaiah, and across both sections (chapters 1–39 and 40–66). This term can be translated sin, offence, iniquity or transgression.

Each of the quotes in the second exercise encourages the people of God to place their hope in Him. No matter the situation: whether one is poor, isolated or landless, Isaiah offers counsel to hope in YHWH. This is a consistent theme throughout Isaiah, both in chapters 1–39 and in 40–66.
